Starfall – Learn to read with phonics

Starfall opened in September of 2002 as a free public service to motivate children to read with phonics. Their systematic phonics approach, in conjunction with phonemic awareness practice is perfect for preschool, kindergarten, first grade, second grade, special education, homeschool, and English language development (ELD, ELL, ESL). Starfall is an educational alternative to other entertainment choices for children.

Starfall’s reading lessons are divided into four sections: ABC’s, Learn to Read, It’s Fun to Read and I’m Reading.

The ABC’s introduce students to letter sounds. Learn to Read teaches students how letters are combined to create words. It’s Fun to Read uses learning activities to introduce simple sentences. Finally, I’m Reading uses simple plays and folk stories to increase student’s reading fluency.

Starfall would be a great site to use up on an interactive whiteboard.  With its bright colourful interface, most students should be able to navigate the site with ease, and take control of their own learning.  Enjoy!
